reason to believe

Joy and rapture. Firstly Charlie for lunch. Then the Independent's Super Sudoku completed in 82 minutes. A new world record. Surely one of the 20 Philips DVD Recorders, each worth £180, with perfect digital sounds and picture quality la la la must be ours. Tune in next Saturday to find out the joyous news.

racing in the streets

Does it get any more exciting than this?

Around 6pm on Monday, and almost witnessed live by Ms Love, a barge collided with Battersea Bridge and got stuck under one of the arches. Major excitement, it even made the evening news, albeit the local roundup. Policemen sent to the scene were overheard singing 'what shall we do with the drunken sailor..'.

Traffic chaos ensued. In an undeniable case of I'm alright Jack, we were able to view hours of frayed tempers and honking horns from the safety of our luxury penthouse. As anyone who's been lucky enough to secure an invite round will testify, the flat does somewhat suffer from traffic noise. However, 3 days on, such noise is a thing of the past. A couple of clever traffic diversions and all of a sudden Battersea Bridge Road is like a quiet Cotswold village.

The bridge is now shut to all traffic except pedestrians and bikes. And will be for the next 2 months apparently. In celebration, and taking a well earned rest from the relentless slog of job interviews, Ms Love and I ventured out this afternoon for our very own bridge party. Reclaim the streets etc etc etc. Recreating that RGJOM vibe we posed for stupid photos sat in the middle of the road and took photos of road signs.

This certainly beats the abandoned car for entertainment (which incidentally is still there, still abandoned by a crack terrorist cell....maybe it was the terrorists that drove the barge into the bridge?) Simply too exciting for words..

no surrender

So. I can't make Pete write the postings forever. Eventually he'll start to think of it as 'his site', and then it will be one long football analysis piece, and I won't have a leg to stand on.

Unfortunately fighting over who gets to use the computer next, playing backgammon with randoms on the internet (Pete only, I have not sunk this low), jogging, reading the newspaper, washing AND drying the dishes after every meal just doesn't motivate me to fill the pages the way hiding in a toilet from an elephant does. Why is that?

This weekend, at least, we did some noteworthy things. Saturday, lunch with the lovely Keith, Lucy, Sam and Charlie followed by a reunion with the Mary Newmans that didn't last nearly long enough.

Sunday was Open House London - an opportunity to go inside 'some of the capital's best architecture'. Pete and I did our bit by wandering around a house at the end of our road for about 4 minutes. We followed that by an aborted trip to the Houses of Parliament - cut short when we saw the queue of about 400 other geeks waiting to get in. We had better luck with the Foreign Office. Even Pete was almost interested, although I think he was at his happiest when taking pictures of the patterned carpet.

Unfortunately all the post-modernist eco houses that I had put hearts beside in the brochure were miles away in New Cross Gate or Hackney and even I didn't fancy dragging myself across London on the bus (the only method of transport allowed on our meagre budget)... speaking of the bus... rather embarassingly all the recruitment consultants I've been speaking to lately have now learned that I like to travel 'off peak' to interviews (so that I can save £1.30 on my travel card). Have I hit rock bottom? I really do need a job soon, if only so that I can take public transport like a normal person again.
